An Auto Center to replace our Corporate Yard
The Council recently directed staff to evaluate the feasibility of and strategies for
moving our current industrial operations from the Municipal Services Center
(MSC) on East Bayshore Road in order to redevelop that property as a site for
automobile dealerships.
Our current auto dealerships, such as Toyota, Honda and Audi, provide the City
millions of dollars in sales tax revenue. These dealerships need larger, better
located facilities. As we’ve seen in Menlo Park, dealerships in obsolete,
landlocked, poorly located facilities will close or move.
Even Porsche moved from Embarcadero to a site in Redwood City offering direct
Highway 101 visibility. And Honda spent over $100,000 fighting Ikea for rights to
better highway frontage.
I believe we have the potential to replace our current industrial facilities at the MSC
with a modern auto center that improves the existing interface with the baylands,
enhances the 101 frontage, and increases the revenues we need for City services.
Staff will come back to the Council probably in late February with an initial
assessment of environmental and financial feasibility.
Few issues today are simple or black and white. Almost
all have a complex past or deal with competing, valid
objectives. Please give me a call if you would like to
discuss this or other issues in more detail.
